This collection on the greatest international cartoonists comes from the interest Ettore Viola had for “d’auteur” comics. He shows them to us through portraits, at times “immersed” among their characters and their drawings, at times just surrounded by their peculiar elements. Here, frames are also important, becoming part of the portrait and serving as “additional tools” in order to give a complete presentation of the characters created by these great authors.

Three americans: Winsor McCay, Chester Gould and Milton Caniff. Two belgians: Eduard P. Jacobs and Willy Vandersteen.

Winsor McCay (1869-1934) –  painter, designer and cartoonist. He’s known as the forerunner of modern comics, as well as one of the pioneers of cartoon movies.

Chester Gould (1900-1985) –Known all over the world as the creator of Dick Tracy, hero of several generations of readers. He drew his adventures from 1931 to 1977.

Milton Caniff (1907-1988) – He’s considered as one of the most important and influential artists in comics’ global history. Among his main works are Dick Dare, Terry and the Pirates, Miss Lace and, above all, Steve Canyon.

Edgar P. Jacobs (1904 -1987) – Born in Brussels, he’s the creator of “Blake and Mortimer” series.

Willy Vandersteen (1913 -1990) – In a 50 years-long career, he published more than 1.000 comics in 25 series, selling more than 200 million copies.

Enrico Berlinguer: the centenary of his birth

Enrico Berlinguer, secretary of the PCI from 1972 to 1984 would have turned one hundred today (he was born in Sassari on 25 May 1922). Ettore Viola remembers him with two portraits for the Manifesto and for the Gazzetta del Mezzogiorno.

Viola’s technique

The main element of Viola’s technique is indian ink traced over pencil lines. Being one of the simplest and fastest techniques, it’s particularly suitable for the frantic times of the daily newspapers he used to work for.
